The Rocky Mountain Marriage Encounter Database's Catalog allows you to search the database entries.

How to Search

The Search Page lets you construct a search. Enter a word or words, select what field to search for from the drop-down list of fields and click the Search button. Your search will be executed against the selected field. You will also have the option to browse an alphabetical list by the selected field if nothing is entered in the search box.

The catalog is not case sensitive. You may use upper or lower case.

Search Fields

A description of the search fields is listed below. If you do not choose a search fields, the system will default to Search Last Name, to search or browse by last name. The search field options are:

Last Name: Type in a portion of last names to find couples whose last name include the search pattern entered. Search patterns may be whole names or partial names: new will include Newby and Newson and Dunnewald.

First Name: Type in a portion of first names to find couples whose first names include the search pattern entered. Search patterns may be whole names or partial names: deb will include Debra and Debbie and Deb.

City: Type in a portion of city names to find couples who live in cities included in the search pattern entered. Search patterns may be whole or partial city names: ranch will include Highlands Ranch and Rio Rancho.

State: Type in a portion of state abbreviations to find couples who live in states included in the search pattern entered. Search patterns may be whole or partial state abbreviations: m will include NM and MT.

Zip Code: Type in a portion of zip codes to find couples who live in zip codes included in the search pattern entered. Search patterns may be whole or partial zip codes: 801 will include 80129 and 80122.

Region: Type in a portion of RMY region to find couples who live in RMY regions included in the search pattern entered. Search patterns may be whole or partial RMY regions: fr will include FRMD-N and FRN.

Valid RMY regions are:
 FRC - Front Range Central
 FRMD-DC - Front Range Metro Denver, Douglas County
 FRMD-E - Front Range Metro Denver, East
 FRMD-N - Front Range Metro Denver, North
 FRMD-S - Front Range Metro Denver, South
 FRMD-W - Front Range Metro Denver, West
 FRN - Front Range North
 FRS - Front Range South
 MONTANA - Montana
 Nebraska - Nebraska
 NM - New Mexico
 Not Entered - Not Entered
 NW - Northwest Colorado

Please note: Some special characters are not searchable. This includes the '/' character. For instance if you would like to search for materials about September 11th, you cannot search 9/11. Instead, enter 9 11 or September 11. You may replace the special character with a space. See the complete list of Special Characters.

Search Tips for Frequent Users

1. Truncate Your Search

Use an asterisk * with part of a search pattern to expand the search: this also helps if you don't know the exact spelling of an author or subject. The * character may be appended to the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of a word.

psych* child* will find items on child psychology or children and psychiatry
tchai* will find items by or about the composer Tchaikovsky
*house will find items on house and doghouse
h*se will find items on house and hose

2. Search with a Wildcard

Use a question mark ? with part of a search pattern to expand the search by a specific number of characters. The ? wildcard character can be appended to the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of a word.

transport? will find items on transport and transports whereas transport* will retrieve transport, transports, transportation, etc.
comput??? will retrieve records containing compute, computed, computer, and computers, but not computation, computerize, etc.
wom?n retrieves women and woman

3. Special Characters (Metacharacters)

All special characters, also known as metacharacters, are listed here:

- dot (.) will match any single character
      p.t will match pot, pat, pit, carpet, python, pup tent
- backslash (\) preceding a metacharacter will remove metacharacter meaning
      dr\. will match dr., but not children
- plus (+) will match the preceding character zero or more times
      do+g will match hounddog, hotdog, doogie hoswer, doooooogdoog
- asterisk (*) will match the preceding character at least once
      car*t will match carted, cat, carrrt
- question mark (?) will match the preceding character zero times or once (but not more)
      c?ola will match cola, ola, but not ccola
- braces ({}) allows you to match exactly as many occurrences as you need
      x{5,10} x occurs at least 5 times, but not more than 10
      x{9,} x occurs at least 9 times
      x{0,4} x occurs up to 4 times, maybe none
      x{8} x occurs exactly 8 times
- dot asterisk (.*) will match any character zero or more times
      first.*last will match first then last, first, the bad last, first shall be last
- bracket ([]) will match any of these characters
      [abcde] will match a, b, c, d, or e
      [a-e] will match a, b, c, d, or e
      [0-9] will match any digit
      [0-9]+ will match one or more digits
      [A-Za-z]{5} will match any group of 5 alphabetic characters
- caret in bracket ([^]) will negate the character class
      [^A-Z] will match non-uppercase-alphabetic characters
- caret (^) will match if at the beginning of the field
      ^video will match if the field starts with video
- dollar ($) will match if at the end of the field
      video$ will match if the field end with video
- pipe (|) will match either of the search criteria is met
      first|last will match first this, or last of all
- Shortcuts for common character groups:
    \w will match any word character ([a-zA-Z0-9])
    \W will match any non-word character (inverse of \w)
    \d will match any digit ([0-9])
    \D will match any non-digit (inverse of \d)
    \s will match any whitspace character (space, tab, etc.)
    \S will match any non-whitespace character (inverse of \s)

4. Advanced Search

mountains and geology will find only entries that contain both (or all) of the words
viruses but not computers will find entries on viruses, but not computer viruses

Note: And is the default search mode, which is necessary only when combining search terms:

(camping or fishing) and survival will find entries that contain the words camping and survival or fishing and survival

Search Results

Results List

The Results List displays the entries of your search results. Each entry on the Results List will provide a basic amount of information which includes the names and city of the entries.
The Results List is displayed in relevance order, the entries with the most matches listed first.

From this page, you can View the Full Record.

Printing the Results

To print the Results page (which contains up to ten couples or a full report), click on your browser’s Print button at the top of the page while the Results page is displayed.

Full Record

To view the Full Record, click on the highlighted name link.

The Full Record is detailed information about the item, including its ID number, names, address, region, encountered date, and other information.

Most Full Records have links to enable you to look at other records which have an element in common with your selected record. For example, you may find links in the City field, etc. Clicking on one of these links will initiate a search on that field.

To view another record, either return to the Results List by clicking on the Return to Couples List button on the left side of the window and select another couple, or click on the Next or Previous link at the top or bottom of the page to take you to the next or previous Full Record in the Results List.

Results Reports

Reports of search results can be generated by clicking on the Report buttons on the left side of the window. Reports include:

- Email will generate a list of all known email addresses from the search results
      Clicking on the email address list will start an email to all email addresses
- Address will generate a list of all known home addresses from the search results
- Wedding will generate a list of all known wedding dates from the search results
- Encountered will generate a list of all known encountered dates from the search results

EXIT: Ending a session

Click the EXIT button at the top of the page to exit the database and return to the RMY Marriage Encounter home page.
